Ryhnold Sommers, 91, rural Cambria

Shiney” Sommers, 91, rural Cambria, died peacefully Friday, Nov. 24, 2017, at UW Hospital in Madison with dear friends at his side.Shiney was born Aug. 23, 1926, the son of William and Hatti (Smits) Sommers. He enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, serving from 1950 to 1954, stationed in Alaska. He was seasonally employed with the former Beaver Dam Green Giant, Michigan Fruit Company and Larson Canning Company (Del Monte Foods) in Cambria. Shiney, along with his brother Bud, were great outdoor enthusiasts, who loved beekeeping, fishing, hunting and trapping beaver, muskrat, fox and raccoon. Shiney will be fondly remembered for his great trapping skills and stories, especially the story about the largest beaver he ever saw that he trapped. He drove around the area to show to everyone. Shiney was also a devoted fan of the Milwaukee Brewers and never missed a game on the radio. Shiney was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Friesland and Robert W. Ginther American Legion Post 521 in Fox Lake. His loving smile, the twinkle in his eyes and his attire that included hip boots, will be forever missed by all who knew him.Shiney is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous close friends.Shiney was preceded in death by his mother in 1961; his father in 1976; his brother, William “Bud” in 2009; and his sister, Katie Tamminga.A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at Kratz-Smedema Funeral Home in Cambria with the Rev. John Hildebrant officiating. Burial will follow in the Cambria Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by Robert W. Ginther American Legion Post 521 of Fox Lake. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of service. A luncheon will follow the committal service at Mojo’s Saloon, downtown Cambria.Kratz-Smedema Funeral Home in Cambria is serving.
